Lidt historie om Horsens havn

Horsens og havnen er grundlagt ved Bygholm Åens udløb i fjorden. Umiddelbart vest for byen deler Åen sig i 2 grene, hvoraf den sydlige, løb sønden om den egentlige by og ud i ”Flasken” medens den nordlige udmundede i fjorden lige syd for det gamle Stjernholms slot eller der hvor Ole Wormsgade nu støder til havnen. 
I slutningen af det attende og i begyndelsen af det nittende århundrede havde havnen en forfaldstid. Men Stiftsamtmand over Århus Stift, Ove Høegh Guldberg, som var horsensianer af fødsel, var stærkt interesseret i byens trivsel, pålagde derfor i 1785 havnekommisionen på det indstændigste, at gøre kraftige anstalter for at forbedre havnen.
Forbedring af havneværkerne og besejlingsforholdene påbegyndtes i 1785 og var fuldført i 1802.
I 1854-56 foretages den næste større havneudvidelse med bygningen af det bassin som nu er en del af Nyhavn.
I 1883 købte havnen sin første dampmuddermaskine og sejlløbet uddybes til 15 fod i løbet af 1883-1892. I 1893 købtes muddermaskine nr. 2 og sejlløbet uddybes til 17,5 fod i en længde af 22.000 fod. Frem til 1902 forbedres havneforholdene ved yderlige uddybning og nye bolværker opførtes på begge sider.
I 1902 fik man besejlingsforholdene forbedret ved opsættelse af ledefyrene, så havnen kan besejles ved nattetid.
I 1903 fyldtes åen, hvilket kostede kr. 300.000 og de sidste minder om Horsens allerældste have forsvandt.
I 1908 påbegyndtes den betydeligste udvidelse der er foretaget på en gang. Havneudvidelsen gik ud på at bygge 856 fod kaj på 22 fod vand fra Nyhavns nordvestlige hjørne mod øst og at tilvejebringe, ved gennemskæring og uddybning, en 20 fod dyb udsejling i flugt med den nye kaj. Herved skabtes den såkaldte ø midt i Nyhavn.
